With Intimate Enemies, Florent-Emilio Siri digs deep into the French psyche to show the reality and horrors of the French-Algerian war. Set in 1959, the story focuses on two antagonistic characters: Lieutenant Terrien (Benoît Magimel, Skyfighters (COLCOA 2006), A Girl Cut in Two), a young soldier arriving in Algeria as the conflict is intensifying, and Sergeant Dougnac (Albert Dupontel, Paris, Avenue Montaigne (COLCOA 2006)), who is as disillusioned and cynical as Terrien is idealistic. The film explores the “war as hell” metaphor, illustrating the propensity to become one’s own worst enemy.

FLORENT-EMILIO SIRI

Born in 1965, Florent-Emilio Siri is among the very few young French directors who have had the opportunity to work both in France and in Hollywood. He began his feature film career with A minute of silence in 1998 (screened at COLCOA 2008) and the critically-acclaimed action film The Nest. He then directed two award-wining Splinter Cell video games, adapted from the Tom Clancy novel. Following the release of The Nest, Bruce Willis asked him to direct his action film Hostage in 2005, produced by Miramax. Florent-Emilio Siri has also directed music videos for rap groups such as IAM, Alliance Ethnik and the Wu-Tang Clan.

PRESS

“A gritty and realistic depiction of a French platoon during the final stages of Algeria 's war of independence, Intimate Enemies is an assured and well-crafted drama.... (Screen International)

“His action chops proven by "The Nest" and English-language debut "Hostage" with Bruce Willis, Siri proves equally adept at capturing the tension and sudden chaos of field skirmishes. [...] Visceral and engrossing, if not ultimately a first-rank war film...” (Variety)

“...An unblinking look at the barbarity of war in general and the particular viciousness of colonial conflicts, which seem only to increase the cruelty due to the intimacy between the adversaries.” (The Hollywood Reporter)
