SPEAKERS:
Liesl Copland, Head of acquisitions, Red Envelope Entertainment/Netflix

Patricia Saperstein, Senior Editor, Variety

Film journalists regularly sound the death knell for foreign film distribution in the United States. Faced with widespread indifference among younger filmgoers and aging, urban elite, distributors are increasingly searching for viable alternatives to the classic model of releasing foreign language films in the US. And yet, despite generally declining box office results, subtitled films regularly break out to reach mainstream audiences, winning critical and peer recognition more often reserved for American filmmakers and talent.

A journalist and three leading distributors of foreign films will discuss their contrasting approaches to today marketplace, analyze emerging trends in distribution, and debate what the foreign film niche market in the US might look like in the not-so-distant future.

FOCUS ON A FILM MAKER:
A CONVERSATION WITH FLORENT-EMILIO SIRI

Moderated by Wade Major, Box Office

Born in 1965, Florent-Emilio Siri is among the very few young French directors who have had the opportunity to work both in France and in Hollywood. He began his feature film career with A Minute of Silence in 1998 (screened at COLCOA 2008) and the critically-acclaimed action film The Nest. He then directed two award-wining Splinter Cell video games, adapted from the Tom Clancy novel. Following the release of The Nest, Bruce Willis asked him to direct his action film Hostage in 2005, produced by Miramax. Florent-Emilio Siri has also directed music videos for rap groups such as IAM, Alliance Ethnik and the Wu-Tang Clan.

Florent-Emilio Siri will share and compare his experience in France and Hollywood.

This HAPPY HOUR TALK is part of a Focus on Florent-Emilio Siri, with the screening of his first film A MINUTE OF SILENCE and the US Premiere of his new feature INTIMATE ENEMIES
